EU Opens Antitrust Probe Into YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok Over Algorithms
Oct 2, 2023, PARIS — The European Commission opened an in-depth investigation into the content recommendation algorithms used by the large online social media services, including YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok, under the recently adopted Digital Services Act.
Of great interest to the Commission are the mechanisms on which the recommended content is based as well as safeguards that have been put in place to prevent the spread of illegal content, including hate speech and drug abuse promotion. The investigation shall focus on how elections and public discourse might be affected by these algorithms.
TikTok is yet another app in the spotlight regarding further questioning about it and more efforts towards avoiding manipulative actions, primarily on electoral content. The platforms should present the responses to the requested information by November 15. After this date, the EU will have assessed their responses and charge fines if the responses are not submitted.
This is part of the continuing commitment of the EU to ensure that the Big Tech companies are implementing stricter regulations on harmful content. Previous inquiries already under the DSA have addressed issues on compliance with platforms, such as Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, AliExpress, and TikTok.
As part of its investigation into how Facebook uses personal data inside the social network, the EU deepens scrutiny of social media algorithms.
Consequences may change how these services operate in the EU and establish a new global model regarding content moderation.
